概要 This study examines the positioning of competitive sports within the governance of higher education. A distinctive feature of East Asian universities is the existence of degree programs primarily focused on athletic performance and university representative teams composed of student-athletes admitted for the primary purpose of competition. Concerns have been raised that these programs may encourage social deviance and function as mechanisms for reproducing socially deviant individuals.

By categorizing these structures, three types of institutions emerge: (1) universities specialized in sports, (2) universities with dedicated sports faculties or departments, and (3) universities without such specialized programs but admitting student-athletes into other academic fields. Additionally, varsity teams often operate under governance and management frameworks separate from the universities to which they belong.

Common characteristics of these institutions include: (1) special admission pathways, (2) organizational structures prioritizing athletic affiliation (sports faculties, varsity teams), (3) academic curricula emphasizing athletic performance, and (4) lowered academic standards for credit acquisition.

These characteristics result in three significant consequences:
A) The creation of isolated student-athletes due to preferential treatment and separation from the general student body.
B) A mindset where athletic success is prioritized over academic achievement, fostering attitudes that may lead to social and even legal transgressions.
C) The devaluation of university sports, higher education, and the cultural role of sports in society.
This study does not negate the role of university sports in higher education but highlights the necessity of governance that aligns with academic integrity and institutional standards.
