| 概要 | This study compared about 3 years of aerobic aquatic vs. land-based exercise in older adults (water group: n=20, mean age 70; land group: n=17, mean age 72) and examined the impact of 1 year of COVID-19–related detraining. Participants exercised twice weekly for 45 minutes, and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and physical fitness were measured six times during training and once 1 year after training stopped. SMI significantly decreased from the first to the second half of the 3-year period in both groups, but after the COVID-19 detraining period only the land group showed a further significant SMI decline, while the water group maintained SMI and grip strength. These findings suggest that long-term water-based exercise may better preserve muscle mass and function than land-based exercise during periods without training. |
