| 概要 | Gen Nakao (in press). From amae to the development of Japanese indigenous psychology. In Rogelia Pe-Pua (Ed.). Research Handbook on Indigenous Psychologies, Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd.
Abstract: This chapter examines the development of Japanese indigenous psychology through a reappraisal of the concept of amae, understood as a culturally embedded form of relational expectation and dependency. Tracing its theoretical origins in the work of Takeo Doi, the chapter situates amae within broader historical and intellectual trajectories of psychology in Japan, including engagements with Western frameworks and the emergence of culturally grounded concepts. Drawing on empirical studies, psychoanalytic perspectives, and archival interviews with Japanese scholars, the chapter highlights how interpersonal dynamics, institutional structures, and linguistic practices shape psychological phenomena. Particular attention is given to the relational and contextual nature of amae, as well as its relevance to both clinical and non-clinical domains. By reframing amae within indigenous methodological perspectives, the chapter argues that Japanese psychology offers valuable contributions to global theory while challenging universalist assumptions in mainstream psychology. Keywords: amae, Japanese indigenous psychology, interdependence, relationality, psychoanalytic perspective, indigenous methodology |
